Weekly Update Volume 3 Issue 10 May 23 -30, 1996 THOUGHT POLICE MACON, GA (May 30, 1996) - A federal judge opened a sealed indictment Tuesday charging Robert Edward Starr III and William James McCranie, Jr. with threatening the life of ATF agent Bart McIntyre and conspiring to use a destructive device in a crime of violence. There also were charges of three counts of conspiring to use a destructive device as well as alleged firearm violations. If convicted the men could be sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on charges of knowingly assaulting a federal law enforcement officer, or making plans to maliciously destroy government buildings and/or structures used in interstate commerce. Nancy Lord, attorney for defendant Robert Starr stated "It appears that since the BATF had no credible evidence of wrongdoing by Starr and McCranie they now have manufactured an indictment that could put innocent men in jail for the rest of their life. When you look at the manner and means of the so-called conspiracy and counts in the indictment it focuses on the militia preparing for a war against the government. The indictment cuts the heart out of our constitution that mandates the maintenance of unorganized state militias to defend our countrymen against all enemies foreign or domestic. This indictment attacks the nonaggressive principle that many militia members adhere to, that while they will not initiate force, they will defend themselves. At face value the indictment appears to strip Americans of the right to defend themselves. Perhaps the present administration may have borrowed some of its 'no right to self defenses' policies and philosophies from a former European governmental regime. I am Jewish and read The Diary of Anne Frank and had I been a little girl in Nazi Germany I would have had no choice but to march to the gas chambers -- unable to defend myself. Our government seems to believe that this will be perfectly fine here, too." J. J. Johnson, founder of E Pluribus Unum of Ohio stated, "This indictment is ridiculous. It smacks of a 'thought police' state. These citizens are being held without bail for alleged 'thought crimes' against the government. No government building exploded. No federal agent was shot or even touched. But there was assassination -- character assassination committed by some news outlets and some government agents against a plumber (McCranie) for committing the 'crime' of owning pipes, and against an electrician (Starr) for the 'crime' of owning wire. Since these gentlemen lived in Georgia some news outlets irresponsibly reported that they 'conspired' to blow up the Olympics and had ties with the (oh no) Michigan Militia. All references to the well publicized 'conspiracy to blow up the Olympics' were conspicuously absent from the indictment. Michigan Militia Corps Executive officer Thomas Wayne stated: "Where are the indictments against CBS and other media outlets that contributed to this masterpiece of malignment? Fear sells. Some media moguls exploit that fear, lace it with innuendo, peddle it for a profit and get off with impunity. With pictures of Olympic Stadiums resembling Roman ruins indelibly etched in the minds of prospective jurors, it may be difficult for them to remain impartial toward dehumanized, demonized militia members that once (so they were told) 'conspired' to blow up the Olympics, that timeless cross-cultural icon that epitomizes 'fair play.' Such irony. Perhaps historians in the next century will characterize this pre-millenial Olympic year as one that was dominated neither by loving liberals nor by concerned conservatives but rather as an era when nearly 5 billion inhabitants of planet earth were held hostage by an elitist minority of media manipulators that shattered all prior world records in the arena of running rumors, throwing dirt and jumping all over moral, patriotic citizens in their quest to capture not only the gold but the very souls of their subscribers who innocently believed the news." The arraignments are scheduled today [May 30] at 11:00 A.M. Eastern Time in the U.S. Middle District Court. Federal officials had already closed parts of the rich Georgee Bank fishing area and cut back the number of days boats could spend at sea in the early 1990's to protect the supply of groundfish -- chiefly cod, haddock, and yellowtail flounder swimming near the ocean bottom. The groundfish are at just one-fourth of the level considered acceptable by regulators, but fisherman say they, too, are a threatened species. Deneret News May 18, 1996 CONFISCATION IN AUSTRALIA Shocked by the slaughter of 35 people at a tourist site on the island of Tasmania, Prime Minister John Howard has said gun owners will be ORDERED to relinquish semiautomatic and automatic weapons for yet-to-be determined payments. Pro-gun activists in Australia are holding rallies across the country, vowing they won't part with their weapons. Internet News Library KILL THE MESSENGER By attacking the First Amendment the gun control lobby is advocating censorship in an attempt to force their agenda on the American public. In a February 14th news release, Rep. Charles Schumer stated: "Today we (the anti-gun lobby) are opening a second front in the war to get guns off our streets. For the last decade we have been fighting in Congress to pass rational gun control laws, and now we have our crosshairs set squarely on the deceptive marketing plays of gun manufacturers." Schumer, and a host of other obsessed gun haters, petitioned the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to ban advertisements that imply guns can be used for self-defense. By Schumer's reasonings the ads are "only commercial speech," so the government can prohibit the expression of any idea Schumer feels is deceptive; that is, any idea he disagrees with. Under the power it has to prevent unfair or deceptive trade practices, the FTC can prohibit misleading advertising. This newest tactic by the anti-gun lobby makes three things blatantly obvious. First, their attack is not directed at the black market in illegal guns. It is directed at honest people who acquire guns through legal channels for a legal use. People who use guns are not complaining. People who see no use for guns are. Second, having not achieved their agenda in Congress the anti-gun lobby is attempting to get the bureaucrats to adopt a "public policy" that congress has rejected. Their focus is the message of the ads not methods of commercial practice. Because they know they cannot compete in the free market place of ideas, they want to ban what they do not like. Third, since the dangers of guns are obvious, the anti-gun lobby must think the American public is very stupid. Gun New Digest Summer 1996 DROPPED PROVISIONS OF ANTI-TERRORISM BILL TO BE INCLUDED IN REVISED IMMIGRATION BILL? A week after the House voted on the anti-terrorism bill, Congress was shifting to consideration of a revised immigration bill. Perhaps not so strangely, many of the items taken out of the anti-terrorism measure were being brought back up in a different costume, including a listing of "specific" crimes in which the new wiretapping authority could still be enacted. Additionally, there are other elements of the bill which could be revived as amendments to other legislation. Gun News Digest Summer 1996
